Closing the gap

Alexander Stolz will take the place of the injured Sven Ulrich as reserve goalkeeper on the substitute's bench this Saturday at the Weser Stadium for VfB's clash with Werder Bremen. "With Alex we have an exceptional second man who we have absolute fate in," explained VfB coach Christian Gross. Whether or not Ricardo Osorio will make the trip to Bremen, following his long journey for international duty, will be decided tomorrow. Then the Mexican international is expected back in Stuttgart after his involvement in the friendly game played in Pasadena, California.

Werder Bremen - a direct opponent

A tough task awaits Christian Gross' men in Bremen: "We're looking forward to the game and want to close the gap on the teams above us. Looking at the current situation in the table, Bremen is a direct opponent of ours," said the Swiss trainer, who expects a brave performance from his men: "So far we have done well away from home when we approached the games confidently. We must try to avoid making any mistakes and defend well. We have our strength in our attacking game and that could help us improve upon our goal difference," said the 55 year old. And the VfB coach had only praise for Bremen trainer Thomas Schaaf and his side: "They are an experienced, attacking side that are strong on the ball. To add to that, Werder Bremen have a very good trainer in Thomas Schaaf."
