Golden goal

VfB coach Christian Gross saw no need to make any changes to his starting eleven compared to the side that began in last weekend's 3-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg. The opening ten minutes saw little action, with both sides merely testing the water and trying to find some rhythm. VfB began then to press forward and had a number of chances to take the lead between the 14th and 28th minutes, all of which went a begging.

Bundesliga debutant unwillingly sets up Marica

The clearest opening fell to Pavel Pogrebnyak in the 28th minute. Hleb laid the ball back from the by-line into the path of Sami Khedira, who drove in a shot from 16 meters out. SC keeper Pouplin parried the shot directly to the feet of Pogrebnyak, who snatched at his opportunity and sliced the ball over the crossbar. In the 41st minute, Ciprian Marica made better use of the next opening that came his way to put VfB 1-0 up. Hleb picked up a Molinaro throw-in and dribbled along the edge of the box before passing to Pogrebnyak. Bundesliga debutant David Williams managed to toe-poke the ball away from the Russian, but only into the path of Marica, who left Pouplin no chance from six meters out. VfB took their lead into the half-time break.

Twice off the line

Directly after the re-start, Roberto Hilbert had an excellent chance to increase the visitors lead. Hleb attempted to drive a pass across the face of the goal, which Pouplin could only re-direct into the centre, where Hilbert was perfectly placed to take on the ball and shoot. The keeper was well and truly beaten but Ömer Toprak was on the line and able to clear the danger. Shortly afterwards, at the other end, Sven Ulreich was forced to fling himself at the feet of Banovic to prevent the Freiburg man from getting his effort away.

Top

The home side increased the pressure as the tie progressed and in the 63rd minute, the home fans thought their side had been rewarded for their efforts when Papiss Cisse took on a cross from Jackson Mendy and found the net with his shot but the ball was deflected home by Butscher, who was in an offside position, and the effort was duly disallowed. Marica had two further headed opportunities to double the VfB lead but neither materialised and when the Romanian did manage to find the net for a second time, the effort was cancelled out for a high boot. VfB had to ride a late Freiburg storm but held on to secure all three points.
