Late rally secures the points

On Sunday afternoon, VfB clashed with the Bundesliga's fourth placed side, Borussia Dortmund, and ran out convincing 4-1 winners. By comparison with the side that beat Freiburg last weekend, trainer Christian Gross made two changes to his starting eleven with Jens Lehmann returning between the posts and Timo Gebhart replacing Roberto Hilbert.

Own-goal breaks the deadlock

VfB made a promising start to the tie and had the bulk of the early possession but it was BVB that had the first true sight of goal. Jens Lehmann collide with Georg Niedermeier, as he went to gather a cross, and spilled the ball to an on-rushing attacker but the keeper was quickly back on his feet and blocked the resulting shot away for a corner. Then, in the 14th minute, fortune favoured VfB. Cristian Molinaro swung in a delivery which Ciprian Marica was able to lay back toward Pavel Pogrebnyak. In his attempt to clear from the Russian, defender Santana turned the ball into his own net and handed VfB a 1-0 lead. BVB went in search of a quick answer and had attempts on goal through Patrick Owomoyela and Nelson Valdez but the visitors efforts proved fruitless and Gross' eleven took their lead into the break.

Mixed emotions for Marica

The second half began with an early chance for VfB to increase their lead. Owomoyela took down Marica in the box and the referee didn't hesitate for a moment in pointing to the spot. Marica took on the responsibility himself but drove his powerful penalty against the cross bar and the danger was cleared. The home side were soon to pay the penalty for their wasted chance. A long ball from the back found Kevin Großkreutz, who laid square for Lucas Barrios and the inform striker had no problem levelling the scores.

The game then lulled until the 75th minute, when VfB won a free kick on the edge of the BVB penalty area. Substitute Zdravko Kuzmanovic stepped up and hammered the ball past the wall and into the bottom right corner - 2-1. In the 86th minute, a lapse in the Borussia defence allowed Marica to break free and slam the ball home to increase the Stuttgart lead yet further and make up for his earlier penalty miss. With the game all over bar the shouting, in the 89thminute, Roberto Hilbert slipped a cross back into the path of Christian Träsch, who didn't need to break his run as he drove the ball into the top left corner and seal a deserved 4-1 win for VfB Stuttgart.
