Impressive team performance

Thanks to an impressive team performance and a late Roberto Hilbert strike, VfB beat 1. FC Nürnberg 2-1 on Saturday evening.
Trainer Christian Gross decided not to make any changes to the eleven that started in last weekend's stunning 4-1 win over Borussia Dortmund.

Gebhart drive opens the scoring

During the opening phase of the game, VfB allowed the home side to come at them. FC took the game to VfB and, with just six minutes on the clock, the hosts had their first sight of goal following a corner taken by Andreas Ottl, who is currently on loan from Bayern Munich. The resulting headed effort by Angelos Charisteas cleared the crossbar. FC controlled the early phases of the tie, but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock. In the 22nd minute, Sami Khedira combined with Ciprian Marica and broke through on the left before passing back across the box, where Timo Gebhart came powering in and drove his shot from 12 meters out past FC keeper Rafael Schäfer to make it 1-0. Shortly before half time, Nürnberg could have considered themselves lucky, when referee Felix Zwayer merely awarded a corner and not a penalty following a clear hand ball by Diekmeier. As a result, VfB took their narrow lead into the break.

Club's top striker levels the scores

It took until the hour mark, but Nürnberg eventually got their equaliser. Albert Bunjaku took on a pass from Charisteas on the left, jinked past Celozzi into the penalty area and drove a dipping shot powerfully into the bottom right corner to make it 1-1. A pacy affair then became increasingly interesting, with opportunities opening up at either end of the park.

Pavel Pogrebnyak had a chance to restore VfB's lead in the 73rd minute, but Schäfer was able to turn the Rusian strikers header away for a corner. With the game looking destined to finish with the points being shared, Stuttgart hit on the break to seal a 2-1 win. With only three minutes to go, the again impressive Sami Khedira put a wonderful pass across the box, which Pogrebnyak stepped over and allowed run through to substitute Roberto Hilbert, who slotted home from a very tight angle.
At the end of an exciting match and a very determined performance, trainer Christian Gross' side left the pitch with all three points under their belt, extending their unbeaten run under the new coach yet further.
